Prevent Dog Bites: A Guide to Kids and K9 Boundaries in Chicago

As a dog trainer with over 15 years of experience here in Chicago, I’ve seen it all. But the most heartbreaking calls I get are those involving a child being bitten by a family pet.

Many parents believe their dog is "bombproof" until a bite happens. Statistically, your child is more likely to be bitten by the family dog than a stranger’s, simply because they spend the most time together. Even the most patient Chicago pup has its limits.

If you want to ensure a safe, happy home for both your kids and your pets, it starts with boundaries and coexistence.

1. Your Dog Is Teaching Your Child (Whether You Like It or Not)

Children learn how to treat all dogs based on how they interact with your dog. If you allow your child to pull your dog’s tail at home, they will naturally try it with a dog they meet at a park in Logan Square or a sidewalk in Lincoln Park.

Don't be surprised if a strange dog responds aggressively to behavior you’ve allowed at home. By teaching respectful behavior now, you are giving your child the tools to stay safe around every dog they encounter.

2. The "Puppy" Perspective: Why Dogs Correct Children

One of the biggest surprises for owners is when a dog bites a child for doing something the adult does daily—like taking away a toy.

The Reality: Dogs often view children as puppies. When a child takes a toy, the dog isn't being "mean"; they are establishing a boundary: "You’re a puppy, and you aren’t allowed to take my things."

Just because you can take a bone from your dog doesn't mean your toddler should.

3. The "Hundred and First" Time Rule

If you don't take the initiative to regulate your child’s behavior, the responsibility falls entirely on the dog.

Your child may have pulled the dog's ears a hundred times without a reaction. But on the hundred and first time, the dog might decide, "I’ve had enough. I’m going to teach you a lesson now." To the dog, this isn't random aggression—it’s a correction, similar to how they would nip a pushy puppy in a litter.

4. Coexistence is Key

At my Chicago dog training practice, I emphasize coexistence over constant interaction. I personally don't recommend heavy interaction between dogs and children until the child is old enough to follow directions like:

  • "Slow"

  • "Gentle"

  • "Be nice"

Until they reach that developmental stage, close adult supervision is non-negotiable. ALWAYS SUPERVISE YOUR CHILD AND YOUR DOG.
